[Asheville, NC]. – August 20, 2021 – From now through September 3, 2021, several relief agencies are staffing a free hotline for debris removal and home cleanup after the recent mudslides and flooding. This hotline will connect affected residents with reputable and vetted relief agencies that will assist in chainsaw work, debris removal, drywall, flooring and appliance removal, roof tarping, and mold treatment, as they are able. All services are free, but service is not guaranteed due to the overwhelming need.
“North Carolina VOAD is committed to working with reputable, vetted relief organizations that have come to help,” said Ann Huffman, President, North Carolina VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). "Affected residents should simply dial 828-222-3975 for help."
"Voluntary relief agencies play a vital role in whole community recovery. The police and fire departments are there for emergencies, but they don’t have the time or resources to clean out homes. This partnership helps connect affected residents with local relief agencies working in the area," said Larry Marks, North Carolina VOAD representative.
“We are offering this service through September 3, 2021 to help facilitate cleanup by various aid agencies standing by to assist those affected by the storms," says Aaron Titus, Executive Director of Crisis Cleanup. “This hotline will alert multiple relief agencies that residents need help. All services are free and performed by vetted and reputable relief agencies and members of VOAD. Response times will vary so we ask residents for their patience while the teams organize their response to help.”
Phone lines will be open until September 3, 2021. Hotline hours may be extended to the weekend as volunteers are available to answer phones. Importantly, this hotline cannot assist with social services such as food, clothing, shelter, insurance, or questions about FEMA registration.
Families affected by the disaster with home cleanup needs may dial 828-222-3975 through September 3 28, 2021.
In order to qualify for FEMA assistance for private homeowners and business owners, there must be 25 homes or businesses that have been destroyed or sustained major damage. At this time there have been no reports of any homes destroyed or have sustained major damage. If you do have damage to your home that you feel would be classified as "major", please let us know by calling (828)682-1885 and leaving a message with your contact information and the physical address of the property.
Accessibility is not covered under this program. Accessibility includes driveways, bridges, and culverts. Although this may have been covered in previous floods, this was part of a special program available only at that time. If enough damage of this type is reported and justified, the program could be re-instated.
In order to apply for reimbursement if the program becomes available in the future, it is critical that you take pictures of the damage, keep receipts, and document any work performed (type of equipment used, hours worked, supplies, etc .... ). You can email those documents to
yanceyem@yanceycountync.gov or mail it to Emergency Management 110 Town Square Room 11, Burnsville, NC 28714.
From the disasterassistance.gov website:
What if my county isn't declared?
Do you have damage from a disaster but don’t see your county declared for Individual Assistance?
Sometimes other counties are added to the declaration later. You can come back and look up your address from our Home page to see if your county has been added. You can also visit FEMA's Disaster Declarations page.
The Newdale Fire Department recently purchased and installed new equipment that will allow students, who don't have access to the internet, the ability to get online to complete their homework. In order to use the free Wifi, students, or parents of younger children, can pull into the large parking lot on the side of the fire department opposite Dollar General. Once in a parking spot, the information needed to get online is posted on the door to the fire station. Unfortunately, at this time all access has to be done from your vehicle.
If your student doesn't have access to the internet, or if the power goes out and homework needs to be completed, drive over to the fire department so your student can get the access they need!
The Department of Insurance Commissioner, Mike Causey, sent a congratulatory letter to Fire Chief Tracy Cox on Wednesday notifying Chief Cox of the results of the recent ISO inspection. "I commend you and your department for your dedication and commitment to making your community a safer place to live" Commissioner Causey wrote. He continued by saying, "You deserve to brag a little about the expertise of your personnel, which saves homeowners money and, most importantly, makes their lives safer."
